ABOUT MICROPLANE CULINARY TOOLS
FROM THE WOODSHOP TO THE KITCHEN

Celebrated Our 25th Anniversary in 2019!

How did we become a worldwide leader in kitchen tools?

Microplane is an Employee-Owned Company

Microplane®, a division of Grace Manufacturing Inc., is the premier brand worldwide for exceptionally sharp culinary tools. Possibly most famous for our graters and zesters, the brand has revolutionized the way chefs and home cooks grate and zest a wide range of ingredients for flavorful, gourmet style cooking and baking. The family-owned and managed company designs and crafts 40+ Microplane kitchen tools. Beyond our graters and zesters, we offer a variety of kitchen gadgets, including tools for garlic, apples, ginger, herbs, spices, avocados, bar accessories, spiralizers, food slicers and much, much more.
Microplane’s ascent in the culinary field began in the 1990s with the launch of a new type of tool for the company’s successful Woodworking Tools division. The long and narrow, rasp-style tool, featuring hundreds of tiny stainless steel razors was first created to shape or file wood.

From the Woodshop to the Kitchen

The big moment came in 1994, when a Canadian homemaker picked up a new woodworking tool, in complete frustration over using a dull grater for the preparation of an orange cake recipe. Sliding the orange across the Microplane tool, she was amazed at how beautifully it worked, with total ease, speed, and efficiency. At this point, Microplane crossed over from the wood shop to the kitchen and in a short period of time has earned a permanent place in the kitchen. Today, culinary professionals and savvy home cooks consider Microplane to be an essential kitchen tool for food preparation.

What makes Microplane so sharp?

Most graters on the market use a stamped metal process. In this process, the teeth are made the same thickness as the rest of the blade. As a result, stamped blades are dull. Microplane utilizes a chemical process called photo-etching that defines and sharpens the edge of each tooth on the grater. The result is a much sharper tooth, and long-lasting, ultra-sharp stainless steel blades, giving you the consumer, a more precise result with far less effort. Just watch your fingers, use our glove and food guards for your personal safety.

Microplane Country of Origin

It’s difficult to compete in the kitchen gadget and cooking tool market while manufacturing in the USA because of intense price pressure from Chinese manufactured goods. As a result, Chris Grace made a hard choice to move part of the manufacturing operations from the US to Mexico back in 2007. A Microplane-owned facility in Mexico seemed the best option to save as many US jobs as possible and keep the Microplane brand going. Microplane chemically etched blades are still made in the USA, but assembled in Mexico
