This classic Armenian orange cake is filled with so much flavor and extremely moist with a nice citrus flavor with added texture from chopped nuts.
If you want something light and tangy, this cake is a simple orange cake recipe made with fresh orange zest. This cake  is also the perfect tea-time cake to serve to your guests.

The Original Armenian Orange Cake Recipe

Ingredients

a
  • 2 Cupsbrown sugar
  • 2 Cupssifted all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 Cupbutter
  • 1/2 Tsp.salt
  • 2 Tbsp.freshly grated orange peel
  • 1/2 Tsp.allspice
  • 1 Tsp.baking soda
  • 1 Cupsour cream
  • 1Egg slightly beaten
  • 1/2 Cupchopped nuts (walnuts, cashews, almonds)

Cooking Directions

  1.  Combine sugar, flour, butter, salt, orange peel and allspice in a medium size bowl
  2. Blend with pastry blender or a fork until mixture is crumbly and completely incorporated.
  3. Spoon half the mixture into a buttered 9-inch square cake pan ( or use a spring form pan to serve at the table.)
  4. Stir baking soda into sour cream and mix into the remaining crumb mixture.
  5. Add eggs and combine thoroughly.
  6. Pour batter into the pan and sprinkle top with chopped nuts.
  7. Bake in 350 degree oven for 40-45 minutes.
  8. Serve warm topped with orange whipped cream.

Orange Whipped Cream Topping

Ingredients

  • 1/2 Pintwhipping cream
  • 2 Tbsp.confectioner's sugar
  • 1 Tsp.freshly grated orange peel
  • 2 Tbsp.Cointreau or Grand Marnier
  • 2 Tbsp.freshly grated orange peel

Cooking Directions

  1. Whip cream until stiff using electric mixer.
  2. Stir in sugar, orange peel and liqueur.
  3. Let stand in the refrigerator for about one hour to combine flavors.
